Manchester City’s title hopes have been dealt a significant setback after midfielder Rodri suffered a devastating ACL injury during their 2-2 draw against Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium.
The Spanish international, 28, was substituted in the 21st minute after awkwardly planting his foot on the pitch. Initial tests indicate torn cruciate ligaments, likely ending his season.
City boss Pep Guardiola expressed concern after the match: “I don’t know yet, I didn’t ask the doctors. Rodri is strong. He leaves the pitch in this action because he felt something, otherwise Rodri stays there.”
“Rodri is the best holding midfielder in the world, a potential Ballon d’Or winner,” Guardiola added. “He’s been fundamental to our success, especially in our treble-winning campaign last season.”
The midfielder’s absence could prove costly, as City didn’t lose a single Premier League match with him on the pitch last season. His winning goal in the Champions League final against Inter Milan capped an outstanding campaign.
Guardiola can call upon Mateo Kovacic, Ilkay Gundogan, and Matheus Nunes to fill the void left by Rodri’s injury.
