More than 50,000 candidates who sat for this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) are yet to secure placement into Senior High Schools (SHS), Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions.
The Ministry of Education has advised affected candidates to use the self-placement option to select schools with available vacancies to secure admission.
The Ministry says another group of about 32,000 candidates were not considered for placement because they did not sit for the BECE.
Speaking at a news conference, Deputy Minister of Education, Dr. Clement Abas Apaak, said candidates who could not write the examination would be given another opportunity to sit for the BECE at a later date.
He said the decision forms part of government’s efforts to ensure that young people who have completed basic education are not left without an opportunity to continue their studies.
“The government has taken a deliberate decision to ensure that these young people are provided with an appropriate pathway to continue their education,” Dr. Apaak said.
The Ministry is therefore encouraging candidates who are yet to secure placement to make use of the self-placement system and choose from schools with available spaces.
The development comes as the placement process continues, with thousands of candidates still seeking admission to their preferred Senior High, Technical and Vocational institutions.
