The Deputy Director of Campaigns and Advocacy of the NDC Youth Wing, Reginald Achiesu Boateng, has criticized Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) for what he described as their failure to effectively address sanitation and infrastructure challenges.
Speaking during the New review segment of the AM Club, Mr. Boateng said many assemblies have failed to fulfil their core mandate of maintaining clean communities and ensuring basic infrastructure is properly managed.
He argued that poor planning, weak supervision and delayed responses to emerging challenges have contributed to worsening sanitation conditions and the rapid deterioration of roads in several parts of the country.
According to him, Accra continues to grapple with poor sanitation and deteriorating roads because local authorities are not being proactive in carrying out their responsibilities. He maintained that district assemblies must move away from reactive governance and adopt preventive measures that address problems before they escalate.
Mr. Boateng stressed that local authorities should regularly desilt drains, improve waste collection systems, enforce sanitation by-laws and undertake routine maintenance of roads to improve living conditions for residents. He warned that neglecting these responsibilities not only undermines public confidence in local governance but also poses health and safety risks to communities.
He further called for stronger accountability within the assemblies, urging officials to make efficient use of public resources and prioritize the welfare of residents through timely service delivery.
“Our MMDAs need to be up and doing—they are not working at all. Accra is dirty, and our roads are in poor condition. They should not wait for the problems to become chaotic before they react,” he said.
His comments come amid growing public concern over sanitation, flooding and the poor state of roads in parts of the capital, with many residents calling for more decisive action from local authorities to improve environmental management and urban infrastructure.
