The Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has turned down a request from the Majority in Parliament to recall the House for an emergency session.
In a memo dated Tuesday, November 26, the Speaker explained that Parliament would reconvene after the elections to address outstanding issues, ensuring a smooth transition to the incoming 9th Parliament of the Fourth Republic.
“The House will resume sitting after the elections to complete all essential matters before a seamless transition to the 9th Parliament of the Fourth Republic of Ghana,” Speaker Bagbin wrote.
The Speaker also emphasized the need for Members of Parliament to prioritize the national interest in their conduct, calling for a display of dignity and humility in their legislative roles.
“In the circumstances, I am neither inclined nor disposed to exercise my discretion in favour of your request. The request is accordingly declined,” he stated, adding that decorum and empathy should guide MPs’ actions.
Addressing Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Speaker Bagbin pointed out that the parliamentary calendar is designed to accommodate campaign activities during election periods. He stressed that this time is critical for government officials, political parties, and candidates to engage the electorate.
“This season is for the government, parties, and both presidential and parliamentary candidates to present their manifestos to the people and justify how the mandate given them by voters for the four-year term has been applied to benefit the nation,” the Speaker remarked.
Parliament is expected to reconvene post-election to wrap up all essential business ahead of the transition to a new legislative term.
