President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has established a five-member ministerial committee to assess the government’s efforts to combat illegal mining (galamsey).

This was contained in a release by Information Minister Fatimatu Abubakar on Friday, September 13.

The committee, comprising senior officials, will review existing measures to address environmental damage caused by galamsey and recommend reforms to strengthen the government’s efforts.

Led by National Security Minister Albert Kan-Dapaah, the committee includes ministers from Natural Resources, Defense, Employment, and Information.

Their evaluation will inform future initiatives to protect the environment and curb illegal mining, amid growing public concern over damage to rivers, forests, and potential health and water crises.

This is the government’s latest attempt to tackle galamsey, following a previous inter-ministerial task force led by Prof. Kwabena Frimpong Boateng, which ended in controversy.
