The NBA has wasted little time setting the stage for a blockbuster opening night. LeBron James will make his Philadelphia 76ers debut at Madison Square Garden against the defending champions, the New York Knicks, on October 20.
The matchup carries plenty of history. The Knicks swept the 76ers 4-0 in last season’s Eastern Conference semi-finals, and James now walks into that rivalry after joining Philadelphia on a two-year, $8 million deal.
For New York, the night will be about more than welcoming a new season. The Knicks will raise their championship banner in front of their home fans, turning the Garden into a celebration before the first competitive ball is even thrown up.
For James, it is the start of another chapter in a career that has already produced four NBA titles. At 41, the four-time champion will begin his first season in Philadelphia under the brightest possible spotlight.
The Sixers will have little time to settle. James will make his first home appearance against the Cleveland Cavaliers on October 22, giving him an immediate meeting with the franchise where he became an NBA champion in 2016.
The opening night schedule also carries another major storyline. The Oklahoma City Thunder will meet the San Antonio Spurs in a rematch of last season’s Western Conference Finals, where San Antonio won a seven-game battle on Oklahoma City’s home floor.
Boston will face Detroit earlier in the day. The Celtics will be looking to respond after a first-round playoff exit, while the Pistons will aim to build on their run to the Eastern Conference semi-finals.
Christmas Day will bring another James reunion. The Sixers star will return to Los Angeles to face the Lakers, marking his 21st Christmas appearance during his record 24th NBA season.
The holiday schedule also includes Knicks against Spurs, Miami against Boston, Oklahoma City against Minnesota and Denver against Golden State. New York will make its record 59th Christmas appearance, continuing a tradition that began in 1947.
The NBA will also take its global show on the road. Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs will face New Orleans in Paris before the teams travel to Manchester for the first NBA game at Co-op Live Arena.
But the opening-night spotlight belongs to the Garden. The champions will raise their banner, while James arrives as the biggest new name in town.
