President John Dramani Mahama has nominated the Bawku Central MP and Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga as Minister-designate for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs while Klottey Korle MP Dr Zanetor Agyemang-Rawlings as Minister-designate for Environment, Science and Technology.

This forms part of President Mahama’s first reshuffle under his second term in office.

The nominations, announced on Friday, August 7, were submitted to Parliament in accordance with Article 78(1) of the 1992 Constitution and are subject to approval by the House.

The President also reassigned Works and Housing Minister Kenneth Gilbert Adjei to the Ministry of Defence. The Defence portfolio has been overseen in an acting capacity by Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson following the death of former Defence Minister Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah in the helicopter crash.

Ahmed Ibrahim, Member of Parliament for Banda, has also been reassigned to head the Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources.

The nominations were announced in a statement signed by the Minister for Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu.

The ministerial nominees are expected to appear before Parliament’s Appointments Committee for vetting before being considered for approval by the House.

The latest changes form part of efforts by President Mahama to fill key vacancies and strengthen his administration following the August 2025 helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight officials, including two cabinet ministers.
