Senior Nursing Officer Salomey Awiti Baffoe has been granted bail of GH¢100,000 in connection with allegations that she aided the publication of false information on social media.

The court has directed that she be released on two sureties, both of whom must be civil servants earning no less than GH¢3,000 per month.

Ms Baffoe, 40, has denied the allegation and pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Her bail comes after she had spent time in custody while investigations and court proceedings continued. An earlier attempt to secure her release was unsuccessful, with the prosecution telling the High Court that her continued detention was necessary to support the investigation.

Prosecutors had also raised concerns that releasing her could potentially lead to interference with witnesses connected to the case.

Her detention had meanwhile become a source of concern for her family, who had appealed for government intervention. The family said her absence had placed a strain on her children, who have been left without their mother during the period of her detention.

The case has also been delayed on a number of occasions. Proceedings were adjourned to October 5 after the presiding magistrate was unavailable due to attendance at a conference for judges and magistrates.

Ms Baffoe is accused of involvement in the publication and dissemination of information on social media which the prosecution considers false.

The prosecution is expected to continue with the case when proceedings resume.

Despite the allegations, Ms Baffoe remains presumed innocent unless the prosecution is able to prove the charge against her beyond reasonable doubt.

She is expected to regain her freedom once the court’s bail conditions have been satisfied.
