The Ferrari driver initially lost the lead to Max Verstappen but snatched it back on Lap 9, setting the stage for a dramatic afternoon.
Verstappen’s eventful day took a turn for the worse as he engaged in a scrap with title rival Lando Norris, earning two 10-second penalties for his aggressive moves.
This melee allowed Charles Leclerc to move into second, and the Ferrari duo enjoyed a largely unchallenged drive at the front.
Norris eventually chased down Leclerc, capitalizing on a wide moment to take second place, but ran out of time to catch Sainz, who claimed the win by 4.7 seconds.
Leclerc completed a double Ferrari podium in third, ahead of Mercedes pair Lewis Hamilton and George Russell.
Verstappen recovered from his penalties to finish sixth, while Haas enjoyed a strong Sunday with Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hulkenberg securing seventh and ninth respectively.
