President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has extended warm congratulations to the country’s Foreign Minister, Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, on her historic election as the 7th Secretary-General of the Commonwealth.
In a statement, President Akufo-Addo expressed profound pride in Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, who becomes the first Ghanaian to hold this esteemed position within the 56-nation organization, underscoring the recognition of her exceptional service to both Ghana and the international community.
“Today, I feel a deep sense of pride and joy in congratulating Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey on her election,” Akufo-Addo said.
“As the first Ghanaian to hold this position, her selection speaks to the strength of her character and her dedication to service, as well as to the esteem in which our nation, Ghana, is held amongst her peers.”
President Akufo-Addo highlighted the Minister’s remarkable record as Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, noting her “unshakeable commitment and grace” in fostering partnerships and bridging divides globally.
He expressed confidence that her vision of inclusivity and progress will resonate within the Commonwealth, guiding its members toward a future of unity and shared prosperity.
Akufo-Addo also extended his gratitude to fellow Commonwealth leaders, acknowledging the “resounding vote of confidence” shown in Ghana’s candidate.
“In choosing her, you have placed your trust in a passionate advocate for our shared values,” he stated.
“With Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey at the helm, we will see the Commonwealth flourish, standing as a beacon of cooperation and strength for its people.”
President Akufo-Addo further recognized the efforts of the outgoing Secretary-General, Rt. Hon. Patricia Scotland, KC, applauding her “outstanding service to the Commonwealth and its organizations.”
Akufo-Addo also expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mata’afa and the government of Samoa for their hospitality during the 27th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), where her election was confirmed.
