The High Court in Accra has admitted the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, to bail of GH¢10 million in a case involving alleged financial crimes.

The MP pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit crime, money laundering and causing financial loss to the State.

Justice Charity Akosua Asem, a Court of Appeal Judge sitting as an additional High Court Judge, granted the bail on Saturday.

Under the conditions, Nana Baffour Awuah is required to provide two sureties and surrender his passport to the court.

The MPs for Bosome Freho and Effia, Nana Asafo-Adjei Ayeh and Isaac Boamah-Nyarko, have agreed to stand as sureties for him and were present in court during the proceedings.

The charges stem from financial dealings involving SIC Life Savings and Loans. The prosecution alleges that the transactions resulted in a financial loss of about GH¢9.85 million to the State.

Beyond the bail conditions, the court has directed the Manhyia South MP to report to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) whenever he is required to assist with investigations.

The Deputy Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Dr Justice Srem-Sai, did not object to the bail application.

However, he asked the court to attach appropriate conditions to ensure that the accused remains available to face the proceedings and does not evade the investigative process.

The case will now proceed as investigations and the court process continue. Nana Baffour Awuah remains presumed innocent until proven guilty.
