The Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, has issued an apology to the Church of Pentecost following controversial remarks made by the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Free Zones Authority, Dr. Mary Awusi, concerning the church’s Chairman, Apostle Eric Nyamekye.

The apology comes in response to growing public criticism over Dr. Awusi’s comments, which were made after the church raised concerns about the environmental destruction linked to illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

During a recent General Council Meeting, Apostle Nyamekye had highlighted the serious impact of galamsey on water bodies, noting that pollution of rivers and streams has made it increasingly difficult for some Christian communities to conduct baptisms in natural settings.

As a result, certain congregations have been forced to rely on man-made pools for the rite.

Dr. Awusi’s reaction, delivered in a media interview, sparked backlash after she warned that the church leader could face consequences if he continued making such statements.

Seeking to calm tensions, Mr. Debrah addressed the issue during his birthday celebration held at a Church of Pentecost congregation in Trasacco on Sunday, April 26. Speaking directly to members, he expressed regret over the incident and appealed for understanding.

He emphasised that the remarks should not be seen as an intentional attack on the church, describing them instead as an unfortunate misstep. He further appealed to the congregation to forgive both Dr. Awusi and those associated with her, stressing the importance of maintaining unity and mutual respect.

Mr. Debrah also noted that several government officials are members of the church, reinforcing the longstanding relationship between the institution and sections of the political leadership.

He concluded by expressing hope that the apology would be accepted and that the matter would be resolved amicably.
