The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has instructed the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Grid Company Limited, Ing. Mark Awuah Baah, to temporarily step aside as investigations begin into a fire outbreak at the Akosombo Power Control Centre.

The directive follows a significant fire incident at the facility, which disrupted power transmission and contributed to outages affecting multiple parts of the country. The blaze is reported to have damaged essential control systems at the Akosombo installation, worsening the instability in electricity supply and leading to extended power cuts in several areas.

Officials say inquiries are ongoing to establish the cause of the fire and evaluate the level of destruction to critical infrastructure. According to the Ministry, asking the GRIDCo boss to step aside is intended to allow for a fair and independent investigation.

In a separate but related development, management changes have been introduced within the Ashanti Regional branch of the Electricity Company of Ghana. The move is seen as part of wider efforts to enhance efficiency and strengthen power distribution systems amid the current energy challenges.

These developments come at a time when public concern is growing over the reliability of electricity supply, as both businesses and households continue to feel the impact of persistent outages.

The Minister is expected to address the situation further at a press briefing scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Monday, where updates on ongoing interventions and plans to stabilise the national grid will be outlined.

Government has reiterated its commitment to restoring a stable power supply and tackling the issues driving the recent disruptions.
