The United States are gathering momentum at exactly the right time. Backed by a passionate home crowd in Seattle, Mauricio Pochettino’s men produced another confident display to defeat Australia 2-0 and secure their place in the World Cup knockout rounds with a game to spare.

After opening their campaign with a convincing 4-1 win over Paraguay, the co-hosts arrived full of confidence and looked every bit a team capable of making a deep run in the tournament. Australia, who had also won their first match, were expected to provide a sterner test, but the Americans controlled proceedings from start to finish.

There was an early warning for the hosts when Mohamed Toure forced goalkeeper Matt Freese into action inside the opening minute. That proved to be Australia’s brightest moment of the evening.

The USA quickly took control through their aggressive pressing and relentless energy. Their breakthrough arrived after just 11 minutes when Folarin Balogun, fresh from scoring twice against Paraguay, burst down the left and delivered a dangerous low cross. Defender Cameron Burgess could only divert the ball into his own net under pressure.

The goal lifted an already vibrant Seattle crowd. Every American attack was greeted with growing belief as the hosts pushed for a second.

That arrived shortly before half-time. Following a set-piece, Sergiño Dest’s deflected effort looped into the air and defender Alex Freeman reacted quickest to nod home. Although the assistant’s flag initially denied the goal, VAR confirmed Freeman had timed his run perfectly, sending the stadium into celebration once more.

Pochettino was delighted with what he saw.

“It was a fantastic game again. A very good first half. We dominated against a very tough team,” he said.

The Argentine also reserved praise for the supporters. “We have amazing fans, it’s matching Argentina. I’m so happy for them.”

Australia attempted to respond after the break. Head coach Tony Popovic introduced three substitutes at half-time, hoping to inject urgency into his side’s play.

While the Socceroos showed more fight in the second half, they rarely threatened Freese’s goal. Cristian Volpato and Connor Metcalfe both had opportunities, but the USA remained comfortable and organised.

“I don’t know if it was the occasion but we looked sluggish, heavy-legged,” admitted Popovic. “They were quicker and more powerful. They won every duel and every second ball.”

The victory continues an encouraging trend for the Americans. Six goals in two matches underline their attacking threat, while their defensive discipline has provided a solid foundation.

Now sitting top of Group D with maximum points, the USA head to Los Angeles to face Türkiye with qualification secured and top spot within reach. For a team growing in confidence with every game, the feeling is that this journey may only just be beginning.
