Morocco kept their World Cup campaign firmly on course with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Scotland in Boston, where an early flash of brilliance from Ismael Saibari proved enough to separate the two sides.

The Atlas Lions arrived needing a statement after their opening draw with Brazil. They got it within 72 seconds.

Saibari timed his run perfectly to beat Scotland’s offside trap before latching onto a clever pass from Brahim Diaz. The forward then unleashed a powerful finish into the top corner, leaving Angus Gunn with no chance and sending Moroccan supporters into celebration.

The goal was more than just decisive. It was historic.

Having also scored against Brazil, Saibari became the first Moroccan player to find the net in consecutive World Cup appearances. The strike was also the fastest goal of this year’s tournament and further enhanced the reputation of a player heavily linked with a move to Bayern Munich.

Morocco’s confidence grew after the breakthrough. Achraf Hakimi surged forward repeatedly from full-back, while Azzedine Ounahi and Bilal El Khannouss stretched Scotland’s defence with clever movement and quick passing.

Scotland, meanwhile, struggled to recover from the early setback. Steve Clarke’s side entered the match knowing victory would have secured a place in the knockout rounds for the first time in their history, but their response lacked precision in key moments.

Their best opening before the break fell to John McGinn, who failed to connect properly with Andy Robertson’s inviting cross. After halftime, Morocco continued to threaten, with Gunn producing an excellent save to deny El Khannouss from close range.

The Scots pushed desperately in the closing stages. Scott McTominay led the charge and felt he should have won a penalty after a challenge from Neil El Aynaoui, but referee Ilgiz Tantashev waved play on.

Even with Lyndon Dykes introduced to provide a physical presence, Scotland could not find a breakthrough. Remarkably, they failed to register a shot on target, highlighting Morocco’s defensive discipline and the commanding presence of goalkeeper Yassine Bounou.

The evening also carried significance beyond football. Morocco captain Hakimi was the focus of attention after a French appeals court confirmed he will stand trial in a rape case, allegations he denies. Despite being booed by sections of the crowd, the defender delivered an impressive performance.

“Did you see the game?” Morocco coach Mohamed Ouahbi said afterward. “Hakimi was extraordinary so we’re very relaxed.”

With four points from two matches, Morocco now stand in a strong position to reach a second consecutive World Cup knockout stage. Scotland’s hopes remain alive, but their margin for error has disappeared.
