France weathered both Iraq and a fierce Philadelphia storm as Kylian Mbappé marked his 100th international appearance with a brilliant brace in a 3-0 victory that secured Les Bleus a place in the World Cup knockout stage.

On a night interrupted by the tournament’s first weather delay, the France captain once again reminded the football world why he remains one of its defining figures. While thunder rolled across the Pennsylvania sky, Mbappé’s pursuit of World Cup history rolled on uninterrupted.

The 27-year-old struck in the 14th and 54th minutes, taking his World Cup tally to 16 goals. That remarkable total moves him level with Germany legend Miroslav Klose and just two behind record holder Lionel Messi, who had earlier extended his own mark to 18.

“If I want to keep up with what Leo is doing, I’ll have to do even more,” Mbappé said after the match.

France arrived in Philadelphia knowing victory would guarantee qualification after their opening win over Senegal. Didier Deschamps’ side delivered with authority, controlling possession and stretching Iraq with clever movement between the lines.

Mbappé’s first goal was a reminder of his growing maturity. After combining neatly with Michael Olise, he curled a superb effort beyond Ahmed Basil to give France a deserved lead. It was another landmark moment in a career already packed with them.

Then came the storm.

What should have been a routine half-time interval turned into a two-hour, 10-minute delay as severe weather swept through the city. Fans wrapped themselves in ponchos, sheltered beneath concourses and balconies, and waited patiently as grounds staff battled to make the pitch playable.

Mbappé later voiced frustration with the conditions. “The side of the pitch where we were attacking was completely waterlogged,” he said. “I would have preferred they spend equal time cleaning both halves of the pitch.”

When play resumed, Iraq’s resistance quickly faded. A costly error while attempting to play out from the back gifted France their second goal. Ousmane Dembélé seized on the loose ball before unselfishly setting up Mbappé for a simple finish.

Dembélé then added a goal of his own, ending a long wait for his first strike at a major international tournament on his 20th appearance across World Cups and European Championships.

The result underlined France’s status as one of the favourites for the trophy. With Mbappé leading the charge and support arriving from players like Dembélé and Olise, Les Bleus look increasingly dangerous.

For Iraq, who are making only their second World Cup appearance, qualification hopes now rest on their final group match against Senegal.

For France, meanwhile, the journey continues. The rain may have slowed the night, but nothing seems capable of slowing Mbappé.
