Presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has clarified recent comments he made about Ghanaians purchasing mobile phones on credit and paying for them monthly.
This clarification was made during his constituency-focused nationwide campaign, where he interacted with the people of Lambussie, Nandom, and Lawra constituencies.
The vice president in an earlier interaction with constituents in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba constituency, promised to engage mobile phone manufacturing companies to provide phones for Ghanaians and allow them to pay as little as GHS1 per month.
This remark by Dr Bawumia received nationwide criticism, with most of them including academics questioning its feasibility.
However, Dr Bawumia explained that his remarks were intended to highlight the benefits and future potential of a Credit Scoring system in Ghana, facilitated by the significant issuance of the Ghana Card, the merging of databases, and the exponential growth of financial inclusion driven by the success of mobile money interoperability.
“With the very significant issuance of the Ghana Card, the merging of databases and the exponential growth of financial inclusion following the success of mobile money Interoperability, all is now set for the operation of a Credit Scoring system for Ghana.,” Dr. Bawumia stated.
“This system will make it easier for ordinary Ghanaians to purchase essentials such as cars and mobile phones and obtain loans at lower interest rates.”
He pointed out that in many advanced nations, mobile phones can even be obtained for free from phone companies under a two- or three-year contract, subject to the individual’s credit score.
This, he believes, could soon be possible in Ghana with the introduction of the Credit Scoring system.
Dr. Bawumia also addressed criticism from his political opponents, asserting that their scepticism stems from a lack of understanding. “Unfortunately, my opponents always think in terms of impossibilities and criticize without knowledge,” he remarked.
The Vice President emphasized the transformative potential of a credit-scoring system for Ghana’s economy and the financial well-being of its citizens. He reiterated his commitment to leveraging technology and financial innovation to enhance access to credit and promote economic growth.
