President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has praised Ghanaian journalists for their resilience, courage, and dedication during his presidency.
Speaking at the 28th Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Media Awards on Saturday, September 28, 2024, the President highlighted the critical role the media has played in strengthening the country’s democracy throughout his tenure.
The event, which also marked 75 years of excellence in journalism in Ghana, was especially significant for Akufo-Addo, as it was his final attendance as president.
In his address, he reflected on the media’s indispensable role in promoting transparency, amplifying the voices of the people, and holding the government accountable.
“The media plays a vital role in any democracy, serving as the cornerstone of truth and accountability,” the President said.
“By providing accurate and timely information, journalists empower citizens to make informed decisions, especially during elections. They are the watchdogs who hold power to account, expose corruption, and ensure that governments remain transparent and responsive.”
Nana Akufo-Addo praised Ghana’s media for its contribution to the nation’s democratic journey, tracing the vital connection between journalism and the country’s fight for independence.
He emphasized that free and independent media is essential to maintaining democracy, stating that Ghana continues to build and sustain its democratic foundations through the tireless work of journalists.
The President also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to press freedom, pointing to key milestones achieved under his leadership, including repealing the Criminal Libel Law and the passage of the Right to Information Act.
Both pieces of legislation have been instrumental in empowering the media to carry out its work without fear of persecution.
“As I near the end of my presidency, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Ghana’s journalists for their dedication, resilience, and courage. They have been an indispensable partner in our democratic growth,” Nana Akufo-Addo said.
