Novak Djokovic’s bid for a historic 100th career title was foiled by Jannik Sinner, who clinched the Shanghai Masters crown with a 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 victory.

World number one Sinner, 23, extended his remarkable season with his seventh title, showcasing impeccable form to outmaneuver 37-year-old Djokovic.

Djokovic aimed to join Jimmy Connors (109) and Roger Federer (103) as the only players with 100+ titles. “I have to keep striving to make it happen soon,” said the 24-time major champion.

With 65 wins from 71 matches in 2024, Sinner solidified his position as a dominant force. His successes include the Australian Open and US Open.

Djokovic’s lapses at critical moments proved costly, allowing Sinner to capitalize on scarce opportunities.

Despite defeat, Djokovic remains optimistic. “I played pretty good, so it gives me reason to believe I can still compete with the best.”

“It’s tough to beat Novak; he has no weaknesses,” Sinner said. “You must seize the small chances he offers.”

A tightly contested first set saw neither player yield a break point. Sinner dominated the tie-break, racing to a 4-0 lead.

In the second set, Djokovic’s missed backhand volley handed Sinner the first break point. The top seed capitalized, securing the break with a forehand winner.

The Italian continued to defend and attack superbly, serving out to claim his first Shanghai title.
