The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has imposed a GH₵500 fine on Nations FC forward Emmanuel Annor for misconduct following his goal celebration during a Ghana Premier League match against Asante Kotoko.
Annor, who scored in the high-profile encounter, celebrated by removing his jersey to reveal an undershirt bearing the inscription, “I belong to Jesus.” While the act received admiration from some fans, it was ruled a breach of league regulations by the GFA’s Disciplinary Committee.
In a statement released on May 13, 2025, the GFA noted, “The player was found guilty of displaying a religious message on his undergarment after removing his shirt in celebration.”
The football governing body emphasized that, while it respects players’ personal beliefs, regulations prohibit the display of religious or political messages during matches.
These rules are intended to maintain neutrality and uniformity across the league.
In addition to the fine, Annor received a stern warning. The Disciplinary Committee cautioned that any further violations could lead to more severe consequences, including suspension.
“He has also been strongly warned that any further misconduct will result in severe sanctions,” the statement read.
The incident has since stirred debate among fans and pundits, with opinions divided.
While many lauded Annor’s public expression of faith, others defended the GFA’s enforcement of its professional conduct rules.
As the league continues to evolve, the tension between personal expression and regulatory discipline remains a topic of discussion in Ghanaian football.
