France midfielder Antoine Griezmann announced his retirement from international football on Monday, capping a decade as a key player under coach Didier Deschamps, during which he won a World Cup title.
The 33-year-old, who faced challenges at this year’s Euros, was instrumental in France’s success in the 2018 World Cup and their runner-up finish in 2022.
“Today, it is with deep emotion that I announce my retirement from the national team,” the Atletico Madrid player shared on social media.
“After 10 incredible years filled with challenges, successes, and unforgettable moments, it’s time for me to turn the page and welcome the new generation. Wearing this jersey has been an honor and a privilege.”
Affectionately known as ‘Grizou,’ he was a fan favorite and a vital player in the squad. He was the top scorer at Euro 2016, where France reached the final but lost to Portugal after extra time at Stade de France.
Griezmann earned 137 caps for France, scoring 44 goals, and established himself as a versatile presence in Deschamps’s midfield.
