The Eastern Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has ordered the closure of Okuapeman Senior High School (OKUASS) and Mount Sinai Senior High School in the Akuapem North Municipality following reprisal attacks that resulted in the burning and destruction of parts of both schools.
The incident occurred at about 2 a.m. on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, although the cause of the attacks remains unclear.
Six students of Okuapeman SHS were injured and hospitalised following the incident. The school’s Headmaster says four of the students have since been treated and discharged, while two remain on admission.
At Okuapeman SHS, the Visual Arts studio, teachers’ office and seven classrooms were burnt. Examination papers and certificates were also destroyed in the fire.
At Mount Sinai SHS, the storeroom and boys’ washroom were also burnt.
Following an assessment of the damage, REGSEC directed the closure of both schools to prevent further escalation and ensure the safety of students and staff.
Students of Mount Sinai SHS have been directed to leave campus by 1 p.m. on Wednesday, September 2, while students of Okuapeman SHS are expected to leave on the morning of Thursday, September 3.
The Eastern Regional Director of Education, Dr. Ivy Asantewaa, described the incident as unfortunate and warned that the Ghana Education Service will not protect any student found to have participated in the attacks.
She urged the students to remain disciplined and focused on their education.
The Eastern Regional Police Commander, DCOP Owusu – Bempah, also expressed concern over attacks on police officers deployed to the schools during the incident.
He assured the schools that the Police would identify and prosecute all persons found to have been involved.
The Chairperson of REGSEC and Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Adjei, expressed disappointment over the destruction, particularly at a time when government is investing in improving facilities in senior high schools.
She said investigations are ongoing and warned that anyone found culpable will face the law.
