Germany looked set for a frustrating night in Toronto. Instead, they found an unlikely hero in Deniz Undav, whose two goals off the bench turned defeat into victory and booked Die Mannschaft’s place in the World Cup knockout stage with a thrilling 2-1 win over Ivory Coast.
For long periods, Julian Nagelsmann’s side were second best. Ivory Coast matched Germany’s intensity, exposed weaknesses on the counterattack, and stood just minutes away from a famous result before Undav’s late intervention changed everything.
Fresh from a six-goal demolition of Curacao, Germany arrived full of confidence. Yet this was a far sterner test. Kai Havertz threatened early, while Aleksandar Pavlovic thought he had given Germany the lead before his effort was ruled out for a foul on goalkeeper Yahia Fofana.
The setback seemed to disrupt Germany’s rhythm. Ivory Coast grew into the contest and found inspiration through the lively Yan Diomande, whose pace and direct running caused constant problems down the left flank.
The breakthrough arrived on the half-hour mark. Diomande surged past Joshua Kimmich and delivered a dangerous low cross into the box. Nathaniel Brown blocked Amad Diallo’s initial effort, but captain Franck Kessie reacted quickest to fire home and send the Ivorian supporters into celebration.
Germany’s frustration continued when Havertz had another goal ruled out. Meanwhile, Ivory Coast carried the greater threat after the break, with Christ Inao Oulaï wasting a promising chance as the African side sensed an upset.
Nagelsmann knew he needed a spark. Just after the hour mark, he rolled the dice with a triple substitution, introducing Nadiem Amiri, Jamie Leweling and Undav. It proved the defining moment of the match.
Eight minutes later, Amiri curled in a superb cross from the right and Undav met it with a controlled volley that flew into the roof of the net. Suddenly, Germany had life again.
The closing stages were frantic. Simon Adingra squandered a golden opportunity for Ivory Coast, while Fofana produced important saves to keep his side level. Both teams pushed for a winner, and the tension inside Toronto Stadium grew with every attack.
Then came the decisive moment.
Deep into stoppage time, Felix Nmecha threaded a clever pass into Undav. The striker spun sharply, kept his composure, and fired beyond Fofana to spark wild celebrations among the German players and coaching staff.
The numbers underline his impact. Undav has now scored in his first two World Cup appearances and has become Germany’s ultimate game-changer. His introduction transformed the tempo, movement and confidence of Nagelsmann’s side.
For Ivory Coast, the defeat will sting. They were outstanding for much of the evening and remain firmly in the race for qualification. For Germany, however, this was another reminder that tournament football often belongs to those who find heroes when they need them most.
