Just days after suffering a crushing seven-goal defeat, Curaçao produced one of the stories of the World Cup. Inspired by an unforgettable goalkeeping masterclass from Eloy Room, the tournament debutants held Ecuador to a dramatic 0-0 draw and secured the first World Cup point in their nation’s history.

For 90 relentless minutes in Kansas City, Room stood between Ecuador and victory. The 37-year-old goalkeeper produced an astonishing 15 saves, the most ever recorded by a goalkeeper in a World Cup match since records began in 1966.

The statistics barely tell the full story. Ecuador fired 27 shots and generated an expected goals figure of 3.05, but they found no way past the veteran shot-stopper. Every attack seemed to end the same way, with Room diving, stretching, or reacting brilliantly to keep the ball out.

“It means everything, it feels like a victory, it’s the first point at the World Cup, it means everything,” Room said after the final whistle. His smile only grew when told of the record. “I knew it was a lot of saves. I know it was a record from a long time ago, so I am really proud. I think in 40 years I will remember this. It will be insane. I think I need a statue in Curaçao now.”

Ecuador threatened from the opening minutes. Enner Valencia looked certain to score after racing clear in the third minute, only for Room to make one of the saves of the tournament. The goalkeeper continued to frustrate Valencia throughout the evening while also denying Gonzalo Plata, John Yeboah, Kevin Rodríguez and Pedro Vite.

Yet Curaçao were not simply passengers. Dick Advocaat’s side showed remarkable courage after their 7-1 hammering by Germany. Tahith Chong led several dangerous counterattacks, while Leandro Bacuna, Livano Comenencia and Jurgen Locadia all came close during a frantic spell in the second half.

The draw felt like a victory for a nation of just 158,000 people. Travelling supporters celebrated every save as if it were a goal, and by full-time those celebrations had become scenes of pure joy.

Room’s journey makes the story even more remarkable. Now playing for Miami FC in the USL Championship, the former PSV Eindhoven title winner and Columbus Crew MLS Cup champion rolled back the years on football’s biggest stage.

For Ecuador, frustration continues to grow. After defeat to Ivory Coast and now a scoreless draw despite overwhelming dominance, they must beat Germany in their final group match to keep their hopes alive.
