The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has faced a series of significant setbacks in the 2024 parliamentary elections, with several high-profile Members of Parliament (MPs) losing their seats to candidates from the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The defeats underscore a shifting political landscape as the NDC makes substantial gains across key constituencies.

Key Defeats for NPP

One of the most notable losses is that of KT Hammond, the long-serving MP for Adansi Asokwa. Hammond, who polled 13,275 votes, was unseated by the NDC’s Godwin Animli Dorgbadzi Dorani, who secured 14,229 votes. Mensah Abraham Justice of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) came in a distant third with 346 votes.

In Okaikwei South, incumbent MP Dakoa Newman also lost her seat, joining the list of prominent NPP casualties. Similarly, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, MP for Ablekuma West, was defeated after garnering 26,575 votes. The NDC’s Rev. Kweku Addo claimed victory in the constituency with 31,866 votes.

The Ayawaso Central Constituency saw another upset as the NPP’s Henry Quartey was unseated by the NDC’s Abdul Rauf Tongym Tubazu. Quartey received 23,345 votes, while Tubazu emerged victorious with 29,755 votes. Charles Kwame Adams of the National Democratic Party (NDP) trailed far behind with 163 votes. Out of a total of 53,550 votes cast in the constituency, 287 were deemed invalid.

Sylvester Tetteh, MP for Bortianor Ngleshie Amanfro, also lost his seat. He polled 27,888 votes, while his opponent, the NDC’s Okle Felix Akwetey, won decisively with 37,473 votes.

In Dormaa East, Twum Barima of the NPP narrowly lost his seat to the NDC’s Rachel Owusuaa. Barima secured 12,050 votes compared to Owusuaa’s 12,310.

Shifting Political Landscape

These losses, combined with the narrow margins in several constituencies, highlight a challenging electoral season for the NPP.

With only a handful of its MPs retaining their positions, the party faces significant hurdles as it regroups for the next parliamentary term. Meanwhile, the NDC’s gains solidify its position as a dominant force in Ghana’s political arena.
