William Essu, the former Legon Cities goalkeeper, has tragically passed away at the University of Cape Coast Hospital in the Central Region at the age of 22.
This tragic event marks the second loss of a goalkeeper for Legon Cities in less than a year, following the passing of Sylvester Sackey in September 2023.
Essu lost his life on Saturday evening at approximately 7 PM after being hurried to the hospital the day before.
Despite undergoing various tests, doctors were unable to determine the cause of his illness.
He was then moved to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital for further assessment, but the results remained inconclusive.
Although Essu seemed to show signs of improvement on Saturday afternoon by drinking a Malta Guinness, he unfortunately suffered a setback later that evening and was declared dead by medical professionals.
Essu, a member of Ghana’s U-23 team that qualified for the AFCON in Morocco last year, had sought help from the Ministry of Youth and Sports to settle his unpaid bonuses for his medical expenses.
Unfortunately, he passed away without receiving the funds owed to him, highlighting the challenges he faced.
