The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has unveiled its manifesto for the 2024 general elections, presenting an ambitious plan to rejuvenate Ghana’s economy and improve governance. The launch took place in Winneba, where the party’s flagbearer, former President John Dramani Mahama, addressed key issues facing the nation and laid out the NDC’s vision for the future.
In his speech, Mahama criticized the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) for what he described as a poor performance, attributing high inflation, unemployment, and the depreciation of the Ghanaian cedi to the current administration’s policies. He pledged that an NDC government would reverse these economic challenges by initiating a National Economic Dialogue, implementing tax rationalization, and introducing emergency measures to stabilize the local currency.
One of the party’s key promises is to investigate the NPP’s controversial “Gold-for-Oil deal” and review the Bank of Ghana’s Gold Purchase Programme. Mahama assured the public that his administration would prioritize transparency and accountability in all future dealings.
The NDC manifesto places a strong emphasis on job creation, unveiling the “24-Hour Economy” initiative aimed at increasing production, boosting productivity, and expanding employment opportunities. Small businesses, women entrepreneurs, and artisans are also promised targeted support through various programs and incentives.
In the health sector, the party aims to uncap the National Health Insurance Levy and establish a Ghana Medical Care Trust Fund to assist individuals with chronic illnesses. The NDC also plans to restore the automatic employment of health workers and expand health infrastructure, including constructing modern hospitals in underserved regions.
Education remains a priority for the NDC, with commitments to improving the Free Senior High School (SHS) program, decentralizing food procurement, and introducing a “No-Academic-Fees” policy to assist continuing students. The party also plans to enhance infrastructure at tertiary institutions to accommodate growing student populations.
The NDC’s manifesto signals its readiness to tackle the economic and social challenges facing Ghana, with a focus on economic stability, job creation, health improvements and educational reforms as the country heads towards the 2024 elections.
