Vice-President Kamala Harris has formally accepted the Democratic Party’s nomination for president of the United States of America in the upcoming November polls.
Speaking during the Democratic National Convention (DNC), Kamala delivered a powerful speech that emphasized unity and urged voters to reject Donald Trump.
Harris, the first black and Asian-American woman to lead a major party’s presidential ticket, shared personal anecdotes and highlighted her background as a prosecutor and vice-president as qualifications to defeat Trump and serve in the Oval Office.
The speech, which capped off the Democratic convention in Chicago, was met with cheers and applause as Harris pledged to “move past the bitterness, cynicism, and divisive battles of the past” and offered a “new way forward” for all Americans.
Meanwhile, in her address, she pledged that if she is elected in November, Israel will always have the support it needs to defend itself, while also acknowledging the humanitarian toll of the war in Gaza and calling for an immediate hostage-ceasefire deal to end the fighting and return those held captive by Hamas.
“With respect to the war in Gaza: President Biden and I are working around the clock. Because now is the time to get a hostage deal and ceasefire done,” she said in her speech on the final night of the Democratic National Convention.
Harris’s nomination comes after a fast-moving few weeks that began with President Joe Biden stepping aside in the White House race. Polls suggest a tight race between Harris and Trump, who criticized Harris’s appearance during her speech.
In her address, Harris honored her late mother, Shyamala Gopalan Harris, and shared how she shaped her life and political career.
