Ghana’s Sports Minister-designate, Hon. Kofi Adams, has vowed to fix the country’s crumbling sports infrastructure and broaden focus beyond football. Speaking before the Parliamentary Appointment Committee, Hon. Adams outlined a bold vision to address poor maintenance, funding challenges, and the long-standing neglect of other sporting disciplines.
For years, some major sporting infrastructure in the country have suffered from neglect. Hon. Adams made it clear that this will no longer be the case.
“We are going to improve upon our maintenance culture. We are not going to let the facilities rot. We will ensure that our limited resources are used to maintain the various facilities and build new ones too,” he stated.
Football has long been Ghana’s dominant sport, often sidelining other disciplines. Hon. Adams said he is determined to change that.
“We are going to focus a lot more on other sports that are known as lesser-known sports,” he affirmed.
Hon. Adams also acknowledged the financial struggles facing the Sports Ministry, including an outstanding debt of 468 million cedis. Clearing this burden while implementing his ambitious plans will require innovative solutions.
Despite questions about his background in sports administration, Hon. Adams remains confident.
“The majority are very happy I have been nominated. I will not disappoint Ghanaians, I won’t disappoint President John Dramani Mahama, and I won’t disappoint myself,” he assured.
