The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to removing beggars, street dwellers, and individuals involved in open prostitution from major urban centres across Ghana.

During a working visit to the Northern Region on Thursday, May 22, the Minister announced that a nationwide operation—led by the Interior Ministry in collaboration with the security services—will soon be rolled out in five major cities, including Tamale. The goal, he said, is to restore order and dignity to Ghana’s urban spaces.

Speaking at the commissioning of a four-storey, 24-unit apartment complex built by the State Housing Company for the Ghana Immigration Service in Tamale, Mr. Mohammed-Mubarak underscored the government’s resolve to ensure cleaner and more secure cities.

He cited a recent operation in Accra that led to the arrest of more than 2,000 foreign nationals involved in street begging. Nearly half of those apprehended have already been repatriated, with the remainder expected to be processed and deported by the end of the week.

The Minister issued a stern warning to those engaged in prostitution on city streets, stating that they too would be targeted under the enforcement campaign.

“The beggars are not just a nuisance—they pose a threat to our national security,” he said. “By the close of this week, we intend to remove all of them. I urge those involved to return to where they came from, or we will come after them. The same applies to those parading as prostitutes. We will not relent until our streets are cleared.”

The crackdown forms part of the government’s broader efforts to address urban disorder, enhance public safety, and reinforce immigration and public decency laws.
