The General Secretary of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), announced that the party has finished its nomination process for the 2024 election, after the passing of its founder and former leader, Akua Donkor.
Afful confirmed that they are now awaiting feedback from the Electoral Commission (EC) to advance with their candidate selection. The GFP’s filing has been marked by internal conflicts, with two separate factions sending opposing instructions to the EC.
Afful’s letter formally endorsed Philip Kwabena Agyemang, known as Roman Fada, as the new presidential candidate, adhering to the EC’s requirement under Article 40(4) of the 1992 Constitution to nominate a replacement within ten days.
However, the party’s National Organizer submitted a different letter, stating that after discussions with Madam Donkor’s family, the GFP had opted to withdraw from the presidential race.
Afful clarified that the party had respected Akua Donkor’s last wishes by consulting senior party executives and four parliamentary candidates. This group reportedly agreed to select Philip Appiah Kubi as the GFP’s presidential candidate, with Vida Eshong as his running mate.
