The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, has issued a public apology following intense backlash over a cash donation he made to Evangelist Patricia Oduro Koranteng, popularly known as Nana Agradaa.
A video widely circulated on social media over the weekend showed Mr. Gyamfi presenting an undisclosed amount of U.S. dollars to Nana Agradaa during a public event. The footage has sparked widespread criticism, with many questioning the appropriateness of the gesture given Nana Agradaa’s controversial history.
In a Facebook post on Sunday, May 11, Mr. Gyamfi addressed the public reaction, describing the donation as a “private act of kindness” that was never intended to be made public. He expressed regret over the incident and apologized to Ghanaians who found his actions disappointing or offensive.
“I sincerely thought that I was doing this act of kindness in private, and never imagined that same could find its way into the public space,” Mr. Gyamfi wrote.
“To all such comrades, I am sincerely sorry for this unfortunate act of indiscretion. I respect and appreciate your views.”
Mr. Gyamfi emphasized that the donation was not politically motivated and reflected his personal values of compassion and support for individuals in need. He reiterated his commitment to ethical leadership and public service.
“My view of public office as a privilege to serve society, solve problems, and help others has not changed,” he stated. “I remain focused on the task entrusted to me by His Excellency, the President, for the development of our country.”
Despite the apology, the incident has fueled a broader debate about the conduct of public officials and the implications of associating with polarizing figures. Nana Agradaa, who has rebranded herself as an evangelist, has been at the center of several controversies in recent years, raising concerns about the optics and messaging of such associations.
On Monaday, Sammy Gyamfi was summoned by the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, for questioning. The details of the meeting has not been made known to the public.
