The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has vowed to limit ministerial appointments to 50 if he becomes Ghana’s next president.
He made this promise during the NPP’s manifesto launch in Takoradi on Sunday, August 18.
According to Dr. Bawumia, a leaner government, can be more effective. “I will have no more than 50 ministers in my government,” Dr Bawumia declared, stressing his commitment to streamlining the government’s structure for better efficiency.
In addition to capping ministerial appointments, Dr Bawumia announced plans to adopt a cost-effective approach to acquiring essential goods for government use. He revealed that his administration would shift from outright purchases to leasing vehicles, printing equipment and other necessary items.
This strategic move aims to significantly reduce maintenance costs and save the government substantial amounts of money annually.
“This approach will not only reduce waste but also incentivize the private sector to invest in expansion and job creation. My government will move towards leasing rather than outright purchase of goods like vehicles and printing equipment, with the private sector taking on the responsibility for maintenance. This strategy will enable the budget to save significant cash expenditure annually across various ministries.”
Dr. Bawumia’s pledge comes after the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, promised to reduce the size of government to no more than 60 ministers and deputy ministers if elected president.
