Abetifi MP and former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, has formally declared his intention to contest the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer position for the 2028 general elections.
The announcement came during a meeting with the leadership of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, where Dr. Acheampong, a devout member of the church, sought spiritual support and blessings ahead of his political journey.
Speaking to journalists after the meeting on Tuesday, June 24, Dr. Acheampong revealed that his decision followed extensive consultations carried out by a team that spent a month engaging with party delegates nationwide. According to him, the team’s findings reflected a strong appetite for a new kind of leadership—one that, he believes, he embodies.
“There is a clear call for fresh leadership within the party,” he noted. “And based on the feedback, a decision has been made that I will contest when nominations officially open.”
Dr. Acheampong emphasized the importance of informing the church leadership before making a public declaration, out of respect for his religious roots.
“As someone who is a product of the church, it would go against my values if the Moderator of the Presbyterian Church heard about my decision on the radio,” he explained. “It was important for me to share this with the General Council and also to seek the blessings of God.”
His entry into the race adds a new dynamic to the NPP’s internal politics, as the party prepares for a post-2024 transition and the selection of its next presidential candidate.
