Abigail Kwartekaa Quartey has made history as Ghana’s first female world boxing champion, defeating Sangeeta Birdie of the United Kingdom by unanimous decision to claim the WIBF World Super Bantamweight title.

The bout took place on Sunday, November 24, 2024, at the Bukom Boxing Arena.

All three judges scored the fight 98-91 in favor of Quartey, marking a dominant performance that earned her the distinction of being the first female boxer in Ghana’s history to hold a world title.

With this victory, Quartey extends her professional record to nine wins in 10 matches, having lost only once and securing six of her victories by knockout.

Ranked number one in Ghana, Quartey is also positioned 50th in the world out of 170 boxers in her division.

Her impressive performance last night not only solidifies her place at the top of Ghanaian boxing but also makes a bold statement on the global stage.

Birdie, who had previously defeated two Ghanaian boxers, suffered her seventh loss in 12 bouts.

With just five wins, four of which came by knockout, the British fighter was unable to defeat Quartey, who avenged her fellow countrywomen.

Quartey’s victory comes after an undefeated run from October 2021 to June 2024, in which she won nine consecutive matches.

Her only loss came earlier this month against Armenia’s Anahit Aroyan. month
