Former British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has announced his decision to resign as Member of Parliament for Holborn and St Pancras, triggering a by-election in the London constituency.
Sir Keir, who has represented the constituency for 11 years, said he considers his time as its MP a great privilege but believes the time has come to hand over the seat to a successor.
His resignation comes after he stepped down as Prime Minister earlier this year, with Andy Burnham succeeding him. Sir Keir had initially indicated that he would remain in Parliament until the next general election.
However, in a statement issued on Tuesday, he said he was now ready to “pass the baton” and pursue other interests outside Parliament.
The former Prime Minister said his immediate focus would be on international affairs, particularly defence, security, trade and technology, as global affairs continue to evolve.
Sir Keir also plans to maintain his longstanding advocacy against violence against women and girls, an issue he has championed since before entering Parliament.
His departure from the House of Commons will now lead to a by-election to determine his successor in Holborn and St Pancras.
