Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku is poised to become the sixth Ghanaian to serve on the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Executive Committee.

Running unopposed in Wednesday’s elections in Cairo, his confirmation is all but assured.

Okraku has arrived in Egypt for CAF’s 14th General Assembly, where he led a meeting with the WAFU B delegation on Monday. As the sole candidate representing WAFU B.

His appointment will place him among past Ghanaian representatives on the CAF Executive Committee following in the footsteps of Ohene Djan, Kobina Hagan, Nana Fredua Mensah, Samuel Okyere, and Kwesi Nyantakyi.

Unlike some of his predecessors, Okraku’s rise has not been marked by direct government backing.

Ohene Djan, for instance, enjoyed significant support from Ghana’s first President Dr. Kwame Nkrumah while Kwesi Nyantakyi’s tenure was bolstered by endorsements from top government officials including then Vice President John Mahama.

Since his election as GFA President in 2019 Okraku has transitioned from an outsider to an influential figure in African football administration.

His unopposed candidacy reflects his growing prominence within CAF’s leadership.

On Monday, March 10, 2025, Okraku chaired the CAF Zonal WAFU B meeting in Cairo, attended by CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe and General Secretary Veron Mosengo-Omba.

Welcoming Motsepe, Okraku praised his leadership and the reforms implemented under his tenure.

He highlighted the progress achieved under WAFU B’s new Executive Director, Philippe Tchere, noting the administrative transformation at the zone’s secretariat.

He also announced the completion of the new WAFU B headquarters in Abidjan, set to be inaugurated on April 27, 2025.

The meeting, attended by football stakeholders from Ghana, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, Benin, Togo, and Niger, focused on key football development strategies, including infrastructure improvements, youth development, and tournament organization.

Okraku emphasized the need for open dialogue and cooperation among member associations to elevate the region’s footballing standards.

Aligned with CAF President Dr. Motsepe’s vision, WAFU B plans to host at least five youth competitions this year to enhance talent development and competitiveness across the region.

With his imminent confirmation, Okraku is set to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of African football governance.
