The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially announced that the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) will take place from February 1 to 28, 2025. This decision was made during the CAF Executive Committee meeting in Nairobi, Kenya, on September 16, 2024.
The first round of qualifiers is scheduled for the weekend of October 25-27, 2024. Although CAF has confirmed that East Africa will host the tournament, the specific stadiums and venues are yet to be announced.
However, CAF President Dr. Motsepe recently visited potential venues in Kenya and expressed satisfaction with the progress made. Dr. Motsepe emphasized the need for collective effort to ensure all facilities are ready for the competition.
Senegal, the current CHAN champions, won the title by defeating hosts Algeria in the 2022 final. The biennial tournament, which began in 2009, features national teams comprised of players from local leagues.
The competition promotes homegrown talent and showcases African football.
The CHAN tournament has undergone changes since its inception. Initially featuring 8 teams, it expanded to 16 teams in 2011 and 18 teams in the 2022 edition.
The competition alternates with the Africa Cup of Nations, providing opportunities for local players to shine on the international stage.
