Glasgow has secured the hosting rights for the 2026 Commonwealth Games, marking the city’s second stint as host since 2014.
The Scottish government has officially backed a revised, smaller-scale event.
The 2026 Games will feature 10 sports across four venues, with athletics at Scotstoun Stadium and swimming at Tollcross. This scaled-down version aims to minimize costs while delivering a high-quality experience.
Commonwealth Games Australia has pledged a multi-million-pound investment, including £2.3m, to support the event.
The estimated total budget for the Games is £114m.
Health and Sport Minister Neil Gray held crucial talks with Commonwealth Games Australia, securing necessary funding assurances. The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) will work closely with Commonwealth Games Scotland to formally announce Glasgow as the host city.
Chris Jenkins emphasized the CGF’s commitment to creating a sustainable, cost-effective model. “Glasgow 2026 will be an important first step…minimising costs, inspiring athletes, and exciting hosts and international federations.”
