Media personality Okatakyie Kwame Afrifa Mensah and another suspect have been admitted to the Mampong Government Hospital under police guard following their arrest in connection with disturbances during the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Ejura Sekyedumase East Constituency executive elections at Wiamoase. in
The Ashanti North Regional Police Command, in a statement released on Monday, July 13, said Kwame Afrifa Mensah, 43, and Osman Awuni, 44, reported feeling unwell after they were arrested on Sunday, July 12, and were taken to the hospital for medical attention.
The Police Command said the two suspects remain in custody while receiving treatment, adding that investigations into the incident are ongoing.
Kwame Afrifa Mensah was arrested together with six other suspects following a disruption at the SDA Church polling station, where the constituency elections were being held.
According to the police, the media personality arrived at the polling station with a group of about 30 men at around 7:45 a.m. The group allegedly became hostile after security personnel questioned their presence, leading to an attack on police officers and the disruption of the voting process.
The police further alleged that electoral materials were thrown onto the ground during the incident, while other members of the group fled the scene. Efforts are currently underway to locate and arrest them.
Preliminary police findings suggest that Kwame Afrifa Mensah claimed some of his supporters had been prevented from participating in the elections and indicated that he had obtained an interlocutory injunction to stop the process.
However, the police stated that neither the Command nor the Electoral Commission had received any official court order halting the elections.
The Command said normalcy was restored after police intervention, allowing the elections to continue under enhanced security. Voting concluded peacefully at about 4:00 p.m., after which the Electoral Commission announced the results.
The Ashanti North Regional Police Command has assured the public that further updates will be provided as investigations progress.
