Germany 7-1 Curaçao: Havertz brace powers dominant World Cup start

Germany’s 2026 World Cup campaign began with a warning to the rest of the field. Julian Nagelsmann’s side brushed aside tournament newcomers Curaçao 7-1 in Houston, producing a display of attacking quality that mixed flair, efficiency and relentless pressure.

For a brief moment, however, the smallest nation ever to reach a World Cup dared to dream.

The atmosphere inside Houston Stadium carried a sense of occasion long before kick-off. Curaçao, a Caribbean island of roughly 155,000 people, had already made history simply by qualifying.

Livano Comenencia -Curaçao

When Livano Comenencia scored the nation’s first-ever World Cup goal midway through the opening half, the celebrations felt like a victory in themselves.

Germany had struck first through Felix Nmecha after only six minutes. The midfielder, combining brilliantly with Florian Wirtz, curled a superb finish beyond Eloy Room to score the fastest goal of the tournament so far.

Yet Curaçao refused to be intimidated.

Comenencia’s deflected strike flew beyond veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer and sparked wild scenes among the Blue Wave supporters. For a few minutes, one of the biggest underdogs in World Cup history stood level with four-time champions Germany.

That dream did not last long.

A hydration break appeared to reset Germany’s rhythm. Nagelsmann’s side immediately raised the intensity, pinning Curaçao deep inside their own half and forcing mistakes.

Nico Schlotterbeck restored the lead with a powerful header before Kai Havertz calmly converted a penalty on the stroke of half-time after Nmecha was brought down in the box.

The match was effectively over 69 seconds after the restart.

Jamal Musiala raced onto a precise Joshua Kimmich pass and drilled home Germany’s fourth. From that point, the gulf in quality became impossible to hide.

Nathaniel Brown -Germany

Nathaniel Brown marked his World Cup debut with a stunning volley before substitute Deniz Undav added a goal and two assists during a lively cameo. Havertz completed his brace late on with a delicate finish to seal a dominant 7-1 victory.

The scoreline carried echoes of Germany’s famous 7-1 demolition of Brazil at the 2014 World Cup, the year they last lifted football’s biggest prize.

More importantly, it extended Germany’s winning run to 10 matches and suggested that Nagelsmann may finally have found the balance his team lacked during disappointing group-stage exits in 2018 and 2022.

With Musiala, Wirtz, Havertz and Nmecha combining brilliantly, Germany looked dangerous every time they attacked. They finished with 26 shots and could easily have scored more.

There were still minor concerns at the back, with Curaçao exposing gaps during their best spell. Stronger opponents may punish those moments.

For Curaçao, the result was painful but not humiliating.

“We expected to do more, but they were too strong,” admitted coach Dick Advocaat. “Despite this 7-1 outcome, the joy of the fans is fantastic. This is not a disgrace, we can still be proud.”

And proud they should be.

Germany took the points, but Curaçao earned something equally valuable on football’s biggest stage: a place in World Cup history.
