Ecuador refused to let their World Cup dream fade away. Faced with elimination and an early German lead, Sebastián Beccacece’s side produced a stirring comeback to beat the four time champions 2-1 and secure a place in the knockout stage for only the second time in the nation’s history.
Germany, already assured of top spot in Group E, struck almost immediately. Leroy Sané finished confidently after just 109 seconds following neat work from Florian Wirtz, but Ecuador believed the move should never have counted after Aleksandar Pavlovic escaped punishment for a high challenge on Pedro Vite.
Instead of folding, Ecuador responded with courage. Nilson Angulo curled a superb effort beyond Manuel Neuer after only nine minutes, ending La Tri’s 242 minute wait for a World Cup goal and breathing fresh life into their campaign.
Germany continued to threaten, with Kai Havertz and Jamal Musiala both going close. They also thought they had won a second half penalty, only for VAR to overturn the decision after Sané was judged to have fouled Vite in the build up.
That moment shifted the momentum. Veteran striker Enner Valencia, making a record World Cup appearance for Ecuador, departed to mixed reactions, but his replacement Kevin Rodríguez made an instant impact by flicking on a corner for Gonzalo Plata to bundle home the winner in the 78th minute.
The final whistle sparked emotional celebrations. Beccacece climbed over the barriers to embrace his family after keeping his promise alive. Before the match, the coach admitted he expected to leave if Ecuador failed to qualify. “We have the possibility of moving forward and, if things don’t work, I will have to leave a place I love very much because I know it’s all about results,” he had said.
Ecuador’s journey makes the achievement even sweeter. After beginning World Cup qualifying with a points deduction and surviving criticism following a poor start to the tournament, they have now defeated one of football’s biggest nations to reach the last 32.
With England now a possible next opponent, Ecuador arrive full of belief. Their resilience, discipline and fighting spirit suggest this memorable victory may be only the beginning.
