Tottenham’s new era under Roberto De Zerbi could hardly have started worse. Spurs were beaten 3-0 by Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium, with their £237m summer rebuild exposed by a side that won the battle for every key moment.
Brentford struck twice before half-time through Keane Lewis-Potter and Vitaly Janelt. Michael Kayode added a third four minutes after the break, while Igor Thiago even missed a penalty as Spurs struggled to respond.
The warning signs came early. Brentford found space with ease, while Tottenham looked slow in the tackle and unsure in possession.
Lewis-Potter opened the scoring in the 12th minute after Mamadou Sangaré drove into the box and created the chance. The move involved 15 passes, a sign of the control and patience that Brentford brought to the game.
Sangaré, Brentford’s club-record signing, was one of the biggest stories of the afternoon. He controlled the midfield and helped the Bees turn Tottenham’s expensive new-look side into a team that often looked short of ideas.
Janelt doubled the lead after Antonin Kinsky could only parry Mathias Jensen’s effort. Richarlison had lost possession in the build-up, and Brentford needed no second invitation.
Kayode made it 3-0 in the 49th minute after Kinsky again failed to hold a fierce Sangaré volley. Thiago then hit the post from the penalty spot, but that miss did little to change the mood inside the stadium.
De Zerbi admitted Spurs were not ready for the physical battle. “We lost too many duels to compete with Brentford,” he said after the game.
Stand-in captain Archie Gray was even more blunt. “They just outfought us all over the park,” he said. “We weren’t up for the fight as they were.”
That admission may matter more than the scoreline. Tottenham have spent heavily on rebuilding their squad, but De Zerbi now has to turn those new pieces into a team.
For Brentford, the win sends a powerful message. After missing out on European football by goal difference last season, the Bees have started this campaign with belief and purpose.
Tottenham now face Charlton in the EFL Cup before Newcastle in the league. After this “Bees Knees” performance from Brentford, Spurs must quickly find their sting.
