Arsenal are back among Europe’s elite, but this was no grand statement. A tense 0-0 draw with Sporting CP at the Emirates was enough to seal a semi-final place, thanks to Kai Havertz’s decisive strike in Lisbon. Relief, more than celebration, defined a night where progress mattered more than performance.

The final whistle brought a mix of applause and exhale. Arsenal had done just enough, protecting their slender aggregate lead to reach back-to-back Champions League semi-finals for the first time in their history. Yet the mood inside the Emirates hinted at unease rather than dominance.

Mikel Arteta had demanded “fire” after a bruising defeat to Bournemouth. What he got instead was caution, and at times, hesitation. Arsenal controlled possession early, but Sporting looked sharper, more dangerous, and far more willing to take risks.

The warning signs came quickly. A loose pass from David Raya gifted Francisco Trincão an opening, while Pedro Gonçalves also failed to punish another mistake. Then came the biggest scare, Geny Catamo’s fierce volley crashing off the post, sending a ripple of anxiety through the stands.

Sporting’s belief grew with every missed chance. Their movement in midfield unsettled Arsenal, while their wide players stretched a defence that looked far from comfortable. The hosts, by contrast, struggled to create clear openings, with their attack lacking cohesion and rhythm.

The second half followed a similar pattern. Sporting threatened without delivering, while Arsenal searched for control they rarely found. Maxi Araújo fired wide when well placed, and for long spells, the visitors looked the more likely to force extra time.

In attack, Arsenal offered flashes but little substance. Gabriel Martinelli blazed over, and Leandro Trossard struck the post late on from a corner. The loudest cheer of the night came not from a goal, but from the introduction of 16-year-old Max Dowman, a glimpse of hope in a tense contest.

Arteta pointed to the effort behind the result. “Our behaviours, attributes, efforts, the team was outstanding,” he said. “That’s what takes you through.”

There was also concern. Noni Madueke limped off with a knee issue, adding to a growing list of worries ahead of a defining clash with Manchester City. “I don’t know, it was something in his knee,” Arteta admitted.

In the end, this was about survival. Arsenal did not sparkle, but they endured. With Atlético Madrid next, and a title showdown looming domestically, the real test of their credentials is still to come.
