Anfield believed, roared, and pushed. But in the end, Paris Saint-Germain delivered the cold reality. A 2-0 defeat on the night, and 4-0 on aggregate, sent Liverpool crashing out of the Champions League, as Ousmane Dembele struck twice to silence the Kop.

Liverpool entered the night chasing a miracle. The 2-0 loss in Paris had left them with a mountain to climb, but Anfield has built its history on nights like these. For long spells, it felt like another chapter might be written.

Arne Slot’s side started with energy and intent. The crowd fed every press, every tackle, every forward run. Virgil van Dijk came close early on, only to be denied by a crucial clearance from Marquinhos near the line.

There were moments when the tide seemed to turn. Alexis Mac Allister thought he had earned a penalty in the second half, only for VAR to intervene and overturn the decision. It was a flashpoint that drained belief just as it had begun to grow.

Slot gambled with his team selection. Alexander Isak was handed a rare start, while Mohamed Salah began on the bench before being introduced early due to Hugo Ekitike’s injury. The changes hinted at urgency, but also disruption.

Liverpool improved after the break. They pushed higher and moved the ball with more purpose. Yet for all their effort, they lacked the final touch, the calm edge needed at this level.

Paris Saint-Germain, by contrast, showed control. They absorbed pressure and waited for their moment. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s creativity caused problems, while Dembele’s pace always looked a threat.

That moment arrived in the 72nd minute. Dembele collected the ball and struck with precision from distance, beating Giorgi Mamardashvili and effectively ending the contest. The second goal, deep into added time, felt like a formality as he tapped in to seal the tie.

The contrast across the two legs was clear. Liverpool fought, but PSG were clinical. Over 180 minutes, the English side failed to score, a stat that tells its own story.

For PSG, this was a statement. The defending champions are hitting form at the right time, now on a six-game winning run. A semi-final clash with either Bayern Munich or Real Madrid awaits, and they will enter it full of belief.

For Liverpool, the mood is different. There is pride in the performance, but also frustration. This season will end without silverware, and the focus now shifts to securing a top-five finish in the Premier League.
