For long stretches, the FA Cup final felt tense, cautious, and painfully short on quality. Then Antoine Semenyo produced one touch of brilliance that lit up Wembley and handed Manchester City a hard-fought 1-0 win over Chelsea.

It was the kind of moment finals are remembered for. With 18 minutes left, Erling Haaland burst down the right and drilled a low cross into the area. Semenyo, tightly marked by Levi Colwill, improvised in an instant, allowing the ball to run through his legs before flicking it beyond Robert Sanchez with the outside of his heel.

Wembley exploded. After a scrappy and frustrating contest, City finally had their breakthrough. For Semenyo, it was another statement in what has become a remarkable first few months since his £64 million move from Bournemouth in January.

Pep Guardiola’s side have often been praised for beauty and control, but this victory came through patience and grit. Chelsea defended with discipline and energy for much of the afternoon, closing spaces quickly and limiting City’s rhythm. Yet finals are often decided by moments rather than patterns, and Semenyo delivered the decisive one.

The goal also carried huge weight in City’s season. After losing back-to-back FA Cup finals against Manchester United and Crystal Palace, they are champions again. Added to March’s Carabao Cup success, the victory keeps alive hopes of another domestic treble.

There was little of Guardiola’s usual touchline frenzy at full time. His muted celebration reflected the struggle of the afternoon. This was not vintage City, but it was effective City, and that remains one of the reasons they continue to dominate English football.

Chelsea, meanwhile, were left staring at another painful ending. This was their fourth straight FA Cup final defeat and a fifth consecutive Wembley final without scoring. For a club desperate for stability, the result deepened the sense of drift around Stamford Bridge.

There were moments when Chelsea threatened to change the story. Enzo Fernandez flicked narrowly over from close range, while Rodri made a crucial clearance to deny Moises Caicedo. Interim boss Calum McFarlane also pointed to a shove on Jorrel Hato that he believed should have resulted in a penalty.

But Chelsea lacked composure in the final third. Cole Palmer, facing his former club, spent much of the match tracking back against Jeremy Doku and struggled to influence the attack. As the game wore on, City looked stronger and more dangerous.

Sanchez kept Chelsea alive with saves from Matheus Nunes and Rayan Cherki late on, but the damage had already been done. Semenyo’s flash of invention was enough.

Now City turn their focus back to the Premier League title race, with Bournemouth next on the schedule. If this proves to be Guardiola’s final season at the club, he is making sure it ends with silverware.
