Manchester United’s search for stability has led them back to one of their own. After months of uncertainty, Michael Carrick is set to become the club’s permanent head coach following a remarkable turnaround that rescued United’s season and restored belief around Old Trafford.

The formalities are still being completed, but the decision already feels inevitable. Carrick, once viewed as a temporary fix after Ruben Amorim’s January dismissal, has transformed himself into the clear choice for the job.

When he first stepped into the dugout, United were drifting. Champions League qualification looked unlikely, confidence was low, and the atmosphere around the club felt heavy. Four months later, the mood has completely changed.

Ten wins in 15 matches have pushed United back among Europe’s elite. Victories over Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool did more than improve the table, they reignited the spirit of a club that had looked lost.

Carrick’s impact has not only been tactical. Players have openly spoken about the togetherness he has rebuilt inside the dressing room. “Everyone is happy to have him as manager,” Amad Diallo said in an interview. “Everyone is with him.”

The winger also revealed the emotional shift within the squad. “Every mistake is not a problem, your mistake is my mistake, so we are a team that doesn’t care if you do a mistake, you go again.”

That sense of unity has become one of Carrick’s biggest strengths. Under previous regimes, United often looked fractured during difficult moments. Now, there is visible trust between players, coaches and supporters.

Carrick’s calm personality has also helped steady the club during a tense period. While speculation swirled around names like Thomas Tuchel, Carlo Ancelotti and Luis Enrique, the former midfielder simply kept winning games.

“The future for me is going to be decided pretty soon,” Carrick said on Friday. “Whatever’s beyond that is pretty close around the corner anyway.”

Behind the scenes, the support for him became overwhelming. Chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox strongly backed his appointment, while senior figures in the squad publicly pushed for him to stay. Kobbie Mainoo even admitted the players “want to die for him on the pitch.”

For many fans, the story carries echoes of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s early revival years ago, but there are differences. Carrick appears more measured, more tactical, and more comfortable making difficult decisions. His handling of setbacks, including the damaging loss to Leeds in April, showed an ability to adapt quickly.

The 44-year-old also understands the weight of the badge better than most. During 12 years as a player, he won five Premier League titles and made 464 appearances for United. He knows what success at Old Trafford should look like.
