Understanding Cervical Cancer
Cervical cancer results from the abnormal growth of cells in the cervix, primarily caused by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). Dr. Esther explained that the disease progresses silently with symptoms becoming more pronounced in advanced stages. The key symptoms include:
- Pelvic or Lower Abdominal Pain: Persistent pain in the pelvic area.
- Abnormal Vaginal Bleeding.
- Unintentional Weight Loss.
- Fatigue: Cancer cells attacking organs can lead to extreme tiredness.
- Vaginal Discharge: Discharge with an unpleasant smell.
Also, Dr. Esther highlighted some behaviors and conditions that increase the likelihood of cervical cancer:
- Smoking.
- Long-term use of oral contraceptives.
- Having multiple children.
- Early sexual activity or having multiple sexual partners without protection.
The Role of Prevention and Early Detection
However, Dr. Esther said that prevention is the most effective weapon against the disease. These are some key preventive measures she shared:
- HPV Vaccination
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the HPV vaccine is most effective when administered to girls aged 9–14 years, before they become sexually active. This protects them against the virus likely to cause cervical cancer.
- Having Regular Screenings
Also, she said that women aged 21–30 should begin their Pap smear tests to detect any changes in cervical cells.
Treating Cervical Cancer
Dr. Esther said when it is detected, treatment depends on its stage. And treatment can be done through:
- Surgery: Removal of affected tissues or organs.
- Radiation Therapy: Using high-energy rays to destroy cancer cells.
- Chemotherapy: Drugs that kill or slow the growth of cancer cells.
The Importance Of Awareness
Dr. Esther stressed that raising awareness is very essential in preventing the disease. She encouraged:
- Public education campaigns to spread awareness and encourage screenings.
- Support from organizations to provide free or affordable screening services.
Bottom Line – This January, take action to raise awareness about cervical cancer. By vaccinating early, screening regularly, and leading a healthy lifestyle, we can prevent the disease, detect it early, and also treat it effectively.
