Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, who passed away on December 29, 2024, at the age of 100, is being honored with a series of memorial events leading up to his state funeral. Carter’s casket, which lay in state at the U.S. Capitol, has been moved to Washington National Cathedral for the state funeral service scheduled for today, January 9, 2025.

President Joe Biden is expected to deliver a eulogy at the service, reflecting on Carter’s legacy as the 39th President of the United States and his extensive humanitarian work post-presidency. The ceremony will feature musical tributes, including performances by country artists Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood, honoring Carter’s appreciation for music.

Following the Washington service, Carter’s remains will be transported to his hometown of Plains, Georgia, for a private funeral service at Maranatha Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday school for decades. He will be laid to rest alongside his wife, Rosalynn Carter, who passed away in August 2024.

Carter’s presidency (1977-1981) was marked by significant achievements, including the Camp David Accords and the Panama Canal treaties. After leaving office, he dedicated his life to humanitarian efforts, earning a Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his work in advancing human rights and alleviating suffering worldwide.

As the nation bids farewell, many reflect on Carter’s enduring commitment to peace, democracy, and service to others, leaving a legacy that continues to inspire.
