The Chairman of Parliament’s Works and Housing Committee, Vincent Oppong Asamoah, has called for a comprehensive review of the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) project, citing concerns that political interference has undermined its effectiveness.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament, Mr. Oppong Asamoah argued that the project has fallen short of its objectives due to what he described as political and personal interests that have influenced its implementation.
He urged the government to reassess the existing contract and take decisive action where necessary, including terminating and re-awarding portions of the project if that would ensure better outcomes.
“GARID has failed. You all know that GARID failed because of some personal interest and political issues. And I urge the current president and our current administration to review the contract. Where it demands termination of contract, let’s terminate it and re-award it, so that next year we’ll not be here talking about the same thing,” he said.
According to the committee chairman, reviewing the project is critical to ensuring that it delivers sustainable solutions to the perennial flooding that continues to affect parts of the Greater Accra Region.
The Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) project is a government-led flood mitigation initiative designed to improve climate resilience through drainage infrastructure upgrades, solid waste management, and other interventions aimed at reducing flood risks across the region.
The project is expected to be completed in 2027.
